Meghan Hanson

Meghan Hanson is the Senior Bureau Official for the Office of Global Food Security at the U.S. Department of State. She leads the implementation of the Department’s food assistance policy, oversees more than 100 programs worldwide, and manages the Department’s food aid technical expertise, including markets, nutrition, supply chains, and monitoring and evaluation. Meghan is committed to ensuring that lifesaving food aid is delivered efficiently and in alignment with Secretary Rubio’s broader foreign policy goals.

Meghan brings years of experience at the intersection of foreign policy and humanitarian response across the federal government. Her previous roles include serving as Director of Policy at USAID, where she led strategic reforms to improve alignment, accountability, and effectiveness in U.S. foreign assistance. Meghan served in other key roles where she advanced alignment between government operations and policy, led strategic reforms to strengthen accountability, and deepened interagency and multilateral coordination with international organizations. She also managed efforts to improve oversight and transparency through programmatic audits, reinforcing her commitment to principled, efficient, and outcomes-driven foreign assistance.

Her approach at GFS emphasizes practical implementation, close coordination with embassies and regional bureaus, and a focus on measurable outcomes for both recipients and the American people. 

Outside of work, Meghan volunteers extensively in her community, serving on a local board to raise scholarships for underprivileged children and leading a Cub Scout pack for many years. She is a native New Yorker and has a master’s degree in international relations.
