Joy Spragens

Joy Spragens is an American investment professional, international business leader, and humanitarian whose career has combined financial expertise with sustained service overseas. She served as president of J. Fowler McKnight Investments before beginning a long association with Merrill Lynch in Washington, D.C., where she worked as a financial consultant and rose to the position of vice president. Her professional activities have also included organizing financial seminars, speaking on business and investment matters, and mentoring students interested in careers in finance.

Spragens gained international business experience during the political and economic opening of Central and Eastern Europe. In 1990, she was an honored guest at ceremonies associated with the opening of the Budapest Stock Exchange and was also invited by the Czechoslovak government to Prague. These experiences placed her at the intersection of international finance, emerging markets, and the region’s transition toward market-oriented economic institutions.

Her international engagement extends prominently into humanitarian service. Spragens is a co-founder and vice president of the Foundation for Peace, a nonprofit organization that works with materially disadvantaged communities in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Through long-term partnerships with local leaders, churches, and volunteers, the Foundation supports education, healthcare, clean water, housing, economic opportunity, and community development. Her leadership has helped connect American donors and volunteers with locally directed initiatives intended to produce practical and sustainable improvements.

Spragens pursued higher education at the University of Georgia and Appalachian State University and has also taken coursework at Vanderbilt and Harvard. She has continued her commitment to education by participating in graduate business career programs and supporting students and interns associated with Georgetown University and American University. Her career reflects an enduring combination of international business experience, financial leadership, educational mentorship, and humanitarian service. She also serves on the Vestry of the Anglican Parish of Christ the King in Georgetown, Washington, DC.
